Rauno Thomas

Rauno Thomas Moss (born in 1977) is an Estonian painter, graphic designer, semiotician, and lecturer at the Pallas Art School, residing in Tartu. Moss began his studies in 1993 at the Tartu Art School, initially in the field of sculpture, later switching to artistic design and painting, and graduated in 1998. He then studied painting at the Department of Arts in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tartu, also pursuing semiotics and cultural studies, where his teachers included Professor Mihhail Lotman. Moss has also worked as a lecturer in drawing, plastic anatomy, and general composition at the Institute of Cultural Research and Arts at the University of Tartu. He has been a member of the Estonian Artists’ Union since 2008.

In his recent work, the artist uses abstract composition, intuitively playing with colors. His works are inspired by internal processes and emotions developed over years of teaching color theory, as well as experiences from his journeys. Moss draws inspiration from Orphism, Suprematism, Futurism, geometric abstractionism, Constructivism, and the Bauhaus movement. The compositions are built on basic geometric shapes and surfaces, creating a sense of wholeness. As a semiotician, Moss incorporates color symbolism and the meanings of shapes into his works, playing with these elements. The only rule is free intuition and a playful approach to meanings.
